Cardinals are expected to cut ties with running back Adrian Peterson

The Adrian Peterson era in Arizona has reached its conclusion.

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Arizona Cardinals are expected to release future Hall of Fame running back Adrian Peterson.

He spent 2017 playing brief stints with the New Orleans Saints and Arizona Cardinals. Peterson rushed for 529 yards and two touchdowns last season for the Saints and Cardinals before a neck injury he suffered in November cost him the final five weeks of the season. He'll turn 33 next week and may have to settle for a committee role, having played more than 10 games in a season just once since 2013.

Schefter reports that there is a chance he could return to the Cardinals.

The source said Peterson could re-sign with the Cardinals at a later date.

Peterson has 99 rushing touchdowns, tied with Barry Sanders for ninth all time.

Peterson rushed for more than 1,200 yards in seven of his 10 seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, including a career-best 2,097 in his MVP campaign in 2012.
