Commerce Minister Suresh Prabhu gets Civil Aviation as additional portfolio

The Commerce and Industry Minister Suresh Prabhu was given the additional charge of the Civil Aviation Ministry today.

The appointment was necessitated after Ashok Gajapathi Raju of T elegu Desam Party (TDP), an ally of the BJP, quit from the Cabinet on Thursday. The TDP, however, has not quit the NDA entirely.

Commerce and Industry Minister Suresh Prabhu asserted that the Centre is focusing on the "futuristic industries", which will expedite the growth of the country.

As per the official tweet of Rashtrapati Bhavan it stated "As advised by the Prime Minister, The President has directed that the work of the Ministry of Civil Aviation will be looked after by the Prime Minister". He was heading the Civil Aviation ministry. He was reassigned to Commerce Ministry during Cabinet's reshuffle a year ago. Suresh Prabhu's main concern as Civil Aviation Minister will be disinvestment of national carrier Air India. Following a number of high-profile accidents on the Indian Railways, Prabhu's ministry took over by Piyush Goyal during the Cabinet reshuffle. Further while submitting their resignations to Prime Ministers, both the parliament members have briefed the reasons to Narendra Modi in a 10 minute meeting.

The TDP minister made a decision to step down from his duties citing a discord between the #Modi government and the Andhra Pradesh government over the grant of special status to the southern State by the Central government.
