Barcelona secures option to sign Brazilian midfielder Arthur from Brazilian club Gremio

The 21-year-old has been linked with a move to the Catalan side for several months, and the two clubs have reached an agreement for an option to purchase the player when the summer transfer window opens in July 2018.

FC Barcelona issued an official statement after midday on Sunday to announce that they have reached an agreement with Grêmio de Porto Alegre to reserve an option to buy Brazilian midfielder Arthur Henrique Ramos de Oliveira Melo.

Arthur, who is known for his passing ability, shone in the Libertadores Cup as he helped Gremio to lift the South American trophy for the third time in November.

This is a complicated transfer as Barcelona now do not have space to register any more non-EU players following the signings of Paulinho, Philippe Coutinho and Yerry Mina.

Arthur had plenty of Premier League interest, notably Chelsea and Manchester United, but the player had his heart set on a move to Spain where he would link up with Brazilian compatriot Philippe Coutinho.

Arthur started his career in 2008 for the youth team at Goias Esporte Clube before moving on to Brazilian top-flight side Gremio in 2010.

Arthur is a Brazil Under-20 global and has played 51 times for Gremio since breaking into the senior team in 2016.
