Nasty flu season appears to be easing up — CDC

But the path of this season's flu trend took a sharp turn in recent weeks.

The prominent virus is H3N2, an "A" strain, according to state public health officials. Of these, 217 occurred in the last two weeks. "They are mixed, like a blended wine", Vincent Enouf of France's national influenza centre said of the yearly vaccine.

"Last year we were lucky, we had a fairly mild season, but even in the mild seasons people get sick and people die, so flu is always a killer and is always a nasty disease, and every winter our hospitals struggle with flu". The flu season can linger into late spring in Georgia.

In total, 4,336 people have been hospitalized in Oklahoma for the flu this season, according to the report.

Flu-linked hospitalization rates continued to rise - from 81.7 per 100,000 people for the week ending February 24, to 86.3 per 100,000 people for the week ending March 3, the CDC data showed.

Influenza is easily spread by coughing, sneezing and nasal secretions, and it can be transmitted on dirty surfaces and hands, officials said.

"We're in the middle of a nationwide flu epidemic and I'm asking North Carolinians to do their part to stay healthy and stop the flu from spreading", Cooper said in a statement.

The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses.

WRAL Health Team's Dr. Allen Mask said the number of flu cases are dropping off, but some patients are still asking about the vaccine. In particular, H7N9, seen primarily in China but not in the United States, is most resistant, he said. Influenzavirus A, which also circulates in birds and can move between species, is responsible for most flu infections and causes the deadliest pandemics - including the 1918-19 Spanish Flu that killed as many as 100 million people. The most recent deaths are all in the age group 50 years and older. If you use tissues, throw them away immediately - and then wash your hands.
