In South Korea, Surprise and Skepticism at Talks

"I expressed President Moon Jae-in's personal gratitude for President Trump's leadership", he said, referring to South Korea's president.

At the very least, the North would demand the withdrawal of USA troops from South Korea. "Hopefully, you will give me credit".

Two South Korean officials had dinner with Kim Jong-un this week in North Korea - that was itself significant. During the Pyongyang talks this week, the two Koreas agreed on a summit in late April, their first since 2007.

"They want recognition as a nuclear weapon state, Kim Jong-un wants that recognition as the leader of a nuclear weapon state".

Trump had previously said he was willing to meet Kim under the right circumstances but had indicated the time was not right for such talks.

India on Friday welcomed North Korea's offer to hold talks with the U.S. and Washington's positive response in this regard and said it hoped that will pave the way for lasting peace and reconciliation in the Korean peninsula.

A South Korean Presidential spokesman said the delegation would also meet Trump.

So President Trump's bellicosity towards North Korea hasn't led to nuclear war, after all. But the North, Rubio suggested, could be secretly misleading the an attempt to pit the USA against the rest of the worldwide community.

Kim responded by calling Trump a "mentally deranged USA dotard". Undoubtedly, Kim has felt the sting of Trump's economic sanctions, but more than Kim, it is the Chinese who have the most to lose economically, especially if war were to break out on the Korean peninsula.

Some analysts agreed with the Trump administration that Kim is suddenly interested in talks because the sanctions are beginning to hurt and because he is genuinely afraid of USA military strikes.

By the "great courageous decision of our Supreme Leader, we can take the new aspect to secure the peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula and the East Asia region", Pak Song Il wrote in an email to The Washington Post.

He warned a meeting between the two leaders poses real security risks. In those talks, North Korea agreed to halt all missile and nuclear testing, with a goal of denuclearization. "It was a surprise to us that he was so forward-leaning", he said.

He mocked US Secretary of State Rex Tillersonin October for "wasting his time" trying to talk to North Korea.

Trump's aides have been wary of North Korea's diplomatic overtures because of its history of reneging on worldwide commitments and the failure of efforts on disarmament by previous USA administrations.

South Korea's Kospi index reached its highest point since October, and Japan's Topix Index increased 1.8 percent, Bloomberg reported Friday. The drills are expected to resume next month and had widely been seen as an obstacle to talks. -South Korean military exercises.

The North was open to "frank" talks with the United States on denuclearization and would suspend missile and nuclear tests while dialogue was under way, Chung said after returning from a meeting in Pyongyang.

The other possibility is that Kim is luring the United States into negotiations and then will make demands that he knows won't be met, said Rubio.

The planned summit was welcomed by arms control advocates, but got varying responses from Republican lawmakers.

The delegation was served North Korean hot pot on the first day and cold noodles- another regional specialty - the next, the Blue House official said.

"If you do that, it will be the end of you? and your regime". But questions remained over exactly what North Korea means by "denuclearize" and what the US might be risking with a highly publicized summit that will build up Kim's stature among world leaders.
