Florida Gov. Rick Scott Signs Gun Package

Florida Gov. Rick Scott Signs Gun Package

Florida legislators passed the bill, SB 7026, earlier this week, three weeks after the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas in Parkland, Florida.

Scott said when he tasked lawmakers with coming up with gun reform legislation, he knew it would be hard. "I believe teachers should teach". The prosecutors' office has not announced whether it will pursue Cruz's execution.

Nikolas Cruz, wearing an orange jumpsuit and looking down, made his first court appearance on 17 charges of first-degree attempted murder Friday.

In schools, the measure creates new mental health programs and establishes an anonymous tip line for reporting threats.

Scott said he plans to meet with those families on Friday. Scott says he wants to take his time and talk to the affected families.

Eligible to carry guns into schools would be a teacher who is a member of the U.S. Reserves or National Guard, in the Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps program, or is a current or former law enforcement officer.

The measure would raise the minimum age to buy rifles from 18 to 21 and extend a three-day waiting period for handgun purchases to include long guns.

Despite the hand-wringing in the capital, the bill, should it become law, will likely prove popular around the state.

About 20 protesters participate in a die-In on the fourth floor rotunda of the Florida Capitol, in Tallahassee, March 6, 2018, as they continue to push for an assault weapons ban.

For Andy Pollack and his son, Hunter, it was a day of mixed emotions as they watched the governor sign the school safety legislation into law.

The NRA insisted that the measure "punishes law-abiding gun owners for the criminal acts of a deranged individual".

"If guns (on campuses) are the appropriate answer, then we owe it to our children to provide appropriate numbers of professionally trained law enforcement personnel, such as school resource officers, school safety officers and local police whose work assignment is to protect students and staff at the school", Nesvig said.

In Florida, however, an 18-year-old can legally buy rifles, with no waiting period.

Most classroom teachers are excluded from volunteering for the program, a compromise aimed at earning the support of the governor, and many lawmakers, who opposed the idea.

Hogg's mother, Rebecca Boldrick, says she contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation this week because threats against her family have continued to appear on Facebook.

The new law also sets aside funding for the development of a statewide program, which will train willing school employees on how to handle a firearm - a program the NRA is in favor of.

"In response to your inquiry, activities have been planned internally by our staff and students; however, as a fellow community member, I am sure you can understand that due to the potential concerns for the safety and protection of our school community, I cannot divulge additional information". Make no mistake, this will make schools unsafe for Black and Brown students.
