FDA Warns Of Fraudulent Flu Medications As Season Winds Down

Twelve more people died from the flu in North Carolina, bringing the total deaths to 276 this flu season, according to state statistics released Thursday.

At Carolinas Healthcare Center and Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center, children 12 and under were restricted from visiting patients to prevent the spread of the flu.

A woman in her 60s, with underlying medical conditions, also died as a result of complications related to the flu. DPH said statewide emergency department visits attributed to the flu have decreased for the last four weeks, but at 8.8 percent, remain well above the baseline level of 5 percent statewide. "As the flu continues to make people sick - and even cause deaths - unscrupulous actors may also be taking advantage of unsuspecting consumers by promoting their fraudulent products that have not been reviewed by the FDA to be safe and effective", said FDA commissioner Scott Gottlieb, MD, in the warning.

Tulsa and other county health departments have been offering free flu shots while supplies last. The flu vaccine has performed better this season against B viruses than it has against A (H3N2). Its quadrivalent flu vaccine, Flucelvax, is derived from mammalian cells and therefore does not require eggs.
