'A Wrinkle In Time' Review: 'A Star Is Born In Storm Reid'

Meg is all the better as a character because she's multi-layered and full of both uncertainty and stubbornness, like most teenage girls-she's clever, vulnerable, furious, anxious about her appearance, hard-headed, and impulsive.

L'Engle's source material is a sneakily deep novel for youngsters, and Jennifer Lee and Jeff Stockwell's screenplay doesn't do almost enough with those themes of death, loss and parents letting their children down.

It is an awkward, laboring affair that - sticking with the time theme - feels longer than its less-than-two-hour runtime.

With these celestial beings designated as Meg's guardian angels, the audience witnesses her overcome fear, before excersing and finding her true power.

Published in 1962, Madeline L'Engle's A Wrinkle In Time follows the four children - Meg, twins Sandy and Dennys and younger brother Charles - as they seach for their missing father with the help of three odd old ladies - Mrs Whatsit, Mrs Who and Mrs Which.

Murry has his head in the stars - his dream is to "shake hands with the universe" - and he teaches his enthusiastic, bespectacled offspring about some big concepts regarding space and time. Soon afterward, Meg is befriended by a classmate, Calvin (Levi Miller), who finds her fascinating.

My guess is that she is well aware that her reputation for powerful, insightful, needle-moving movies like Selma, 13th, and Middle of Nowhere doesn't really jive with this particular endeavor. This is the first sign of many we get that this school is obsessed with Meg. Better to let it live in imaginations than present a watered-down (or far too complicated) version on screen.

Reese Witherspoon chews scenery as Mrs. Whatsit, an annoying being who mugs at the camera more than Kate McKinnon in "Ghostbusters". Which (Oprah Winfrey), a 50-foot ghost woman whose sole goal is to reign in Mrs. Whatsit and spout words of encouragement like the Oracle from "The Matrix".

It's worth hanging around for the spectacle at the beginning of the credits, since "A Wrinkle In Time" is often a gorgeous, colorful movie. It is a juxtaposition to her co-stars, Charles Wallace, Meg's younger brother played by Deric McCabe, and her friend Calvin, played by Levi Miller, who have zero inhibitions as the three embark on this mission to rescue her father. Nonetheless, "A Wrinkle in Time" still has the misfortune of feeling like it's stealing from the very things that stole from it. That's all well and good, but it's done with such stunning imprecision. It's a tricky maneuver, trying to find the right tone in an earnest kid's fantasy film like this, and DuVernay and her writers lose the thread repeatedly.

While not terrific, Reid ("A Happening of Monumental Proportions") is likeable while succeeding in conveying the passiveness of Meg.

There's a lovely shot, early in the movie, where Charles Wallace waits in the school principal's office, his posture echoed by James Baldwin in a photo hanging on the wall. Then again, he has nothing on the weirdos played by Winfrey, who is fine but not interesting; Kaling, hamstrung by the fact that Mrs. "You see Ava and all of that Black girl magic in every frame". They just latch onto how what they're watching makes them feel. Adults, though, may want to just give this a miss, as it lacks the smart winks and nods some Pixar films tack in for their older audience.

Granted, this story was never going to be an easy one to tell, and as a result, the movie is incredibly ambitious in its scope.

Given that the movie's aimed at kids, it's a safe choice to take them to see this.

Still, with its bright color palette, appealing lead players and moments of comic relief - Zach Galifinakis shows up to play a rather anxious Happy Medium - "A Wrinkle in Time" is often attractive to watch. It is not without its good qualities. Sometimes art can help guide you through turbulent times, especially for the artist, who is just super sensitive.
