Still, the way that Davis is playing in his absence lends credence to the notion that New Orleans could be rather unsafe if and when Cousins both re-signs and returns to full strength.

"Knowing the position that we're in, I'm gonna do whatever I can to help the team", he said after the game.

Davis came out with the team to warm up for the second half, declaring himself good to go after adding some protection for his ribcage.

He has been on a tear since teammate DeMarcus Cousins went down with a season-ending injury to his Achilles tendon.

The Pelicans, who visited Sacramento late Wednesday night, now settle back into their familiar surroundings, playing eight of their next nine games in the Smoothie King Center, starting at 7 p.m. Friday against the Washington Wizards. The most recent of those, Sacramento's 114-103 decision in New Orleans on January 30, came four days after the Pelicans lost All-Star DeMarcus Cousins for the rest of the season with an Achilles' tendon injury.

Gentry, Davis' head coach for three seasons, knows that Davis' ambitious efforts occasionally land him in the locker room early, but it's the toughness of the sixth-year veteran that allows him to return from short-term injury to perform.

The Mavericks beat the Nuggets and could move down in the tank-a-thon if Sacramento loses its next game.

The Nuggets lost to the Mavericks, but because the Pelicans beat the Clippers, Denver is still No. 8 and Los Angeles is No. 9.

They started their latest must-win game in halting fashion, missing shots and mishandling the ball. "Then, defensively, because of our offense, we got frustrated and played poorly".

"I always want to take the big shots; make or miss, we are going to live with it", Davis said. To silence the crowd Jrue Holiday (19 points, 17 assists) zoomed up the court for a pull-up and-one jumper at the free-throw line to put his team back on top. "We just didn't play like ourselves".

"I hope so", Davis told the New York Times' Marc Stein. "That is why he is an All-Star player and the leader of our team".
