Parkland shooting: Lawmakers say let school's students skip state tests

The National School Walkout will take place on Wednesday, March 14 at 10 response to the high school shooting in Parkland, Florida that claimed the lives of 17 people. The objective of the organized walkout is to "demand Congress pass legislation to keep us safe from gun violence at our schools, on our streets and in our homes and places of worship".

The number of school threats have spiked since the shooting Parkland, Florida, and in light of recent events, students across the country are planning a walkout to march for school safety.

High School - Student groups are working together with the leadership of the CHS Student Council to plan for CHS's participation.

"We don't support it, condone it, or promote it", said Katy Urban, Community Relations Manager for the Rapid City Area Schools. She said dozens of students seem committed to participating.

"I wanted to be involved with something that I believed in to get the message out that we need to do something about gun violence and to remember the victims", Hoffman said.

Butler said the district wants to prevent an "oppositional or confrontational type situation" from happening, and that the district itself must remain neutral on the subjects.

The schools will not suspend students who choose to participate in such events, the letter says.

"We're encouraging other actions", she said of the walkout.

He added that the school district is always working on how to best handle a active shooter situation and following best practices.

The walkout, spearheaded by the Women's March, is one of a series of walkouts and marches scheduled over the next few months to urge lawmakers to strengthen gun-control laws.

"To like feel how one student impacted us compared to seventeen there".

While the school district recognizes this as "an opportunity for young people to exhibit civil responsibility", it notes that schools must comply with policies and regulations.

Students will be instructed to take the letters home to be reviewed by their parent and/or guardian. As you think ahead, I encourage each of you to speak with students in your building and encourage alternate activities; however, if they are going to participate, it is critical to provide a safe environment with adult supervision.

Hoffman said that ultimately, the goal of the walkout is to incite change for how gun violence is approached at a state and national level. "If we tried to artificially contain this, we'd end up with discipline issues".

Gottinger said some students have come forward with plans for a walkout, and the administration hopes to formulate a plan of action soon.
