NFL Combine: Day 4 Winners and Losers

NFL Combine: Day 4 Winners and Losers

It's tough for an "undersized" defensive back to post truly impressive numbers at the NFL Scouting Combine. Why? The Browns have the Nos.

Already the clear-cut No. 1 at his position and an nearly surefire top-five pick, Barkley delivered a singular performance, further bolstering his case to be the first overall selection in the draft. "Another team, which had given only four draft prospects flawless grades in the last 20 years, told me Barkley is the fifth".

When you have the top pick in the draft, you don't settle for a player at the most important position in sports. PFF's Steve Palazzolo sees former Virginia Tech linebacker Tremaine Edmunds as the Chargers' pick at No. 17 overall in the first round. A quarterback class this diverse at the top - with this many options - isn't something we have come across often. You don't need to be particularly fast as an offensive lineman, or even a quarterback, but it sure helps wide receivers and defensive backs. If they don't plan to take their quarterback at No. 1, then they'll have to cross their fingers he falls to No. 4. So, if this is my last play that I ever play, how do I want to go out? 2 or 3 spot to steal him away from Cleveland. They've got the right pieces. Or, better yet, the Browns will do the opposite of what everyone expects. General manager Dave Gettelman appears contempt with Eli Manning as the starter next year and Davis Webb as the backup/development arm.

So let's say the Browns draft Barkley at one with the intention of drafting Mayfield at four. The projection seemed to come out of nowhere.

The 2018 National Football League scouting combine came to a close Monday when defensive backs ran the 40-yard dash and did other on-field work at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Enter Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield, a shorter quarterback with an intense competitive fire, and a stronger arm that you might think. He could go to the Browns at No. 4.

Due to the obvious nature of their standout performers, however, we'll leave them as honorable mentions who are nearly assumed as inclusions.

Cornerback Trumaine Johnson and wide receiver Sammy Watkins are two of the clubs' most high-profile players slated to become unrestricted free agents on March 14. And the Browns apparently have plans for when that period opens.

As you'll see in the first slide, I know what I'd prefer them to do at the No. 8 pick in the draft. I'm hearing that's coach Hue Jackson's preference, having coached McCarron in Cincinnati as Bengals offensive coordinator. Corners that run 4.67 do not find themselves high in the NFL Draft.

So for now, don't buy the rumors the Browns are spreading.

Southern California's Sam Darnold, who some expect to be the No. 1 quarterback taken, was also in the group but chose not to throw at the Combine.

Injuries and a lack of production will hurt Scarbrough's stock, but in the fifth round he is a good prospect to take a chance on.

There's too much for them to lose by telegraphing their pass.

And while yes, Beane and McDermott would be sticking their neck out by making that big move up, and if it doesn't work out that likely seals their fate - the same would be said for them taking a quarterback really anywhere in the first round, so they might as well take advantage of all the draft capital they have racked up and then get their pie in the sky quarterback. If Corey Coleman is on his way out, the Browns will need to prioritize another playmaker in a weak receiver corps. They've been lying all along.

He adds range to the middle of the Chargers defense that will only get better with an added playmaker at the linebacker level.
