Finally, Buhari Set to Visit Benue, Taraba, Others

A statement by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, yesterday said that President Buhari is the only foreign leader invited to the historic event as the special guest of honour.

President Buhari is expected to use his speech to reaffirm the long-standing warm relations between the peoples and governments of both nations, according to the Presidency.

Noting that that collective effort is required for peace and security, President Buhari appealed to all Nigerians the victims of the attacks get justice through the identification and prosecution of the perpetrators.

Why it matters: Mr. Buhari had come under criticisms for planning to attend Ghana's 61st independence anniversary celebrations, but not visiting the town where 110 schoolgirls were kidnapped in his own country, or even where humanitarian workers were killed last Monday.

Disclosing that the president had been receiving daily briefings over the incidents and also in constant touch with governors of the affected states, Adesina stated he had equally advised Nigerians to cooperate with security agents with a view to nipping the matters in the bud.

Since January 1 when suspected herdsmen killed 73 persons in Benue, the herdsmen-farmers clashes have continued to generate headlines and debates.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described President Mohammadu Buhari's visit to Taraba and the planned visit to other places were killings had occurred as an afterthought.
