Death toll due to flu now stands at 184 in Arkansas

"We don't know. It's really hard to predict flu, but it could be a month and a half", Fry said.

This flu season is breaking records and experts say it's not slowing down.

Overall, fewer people are going to see a doctor for the flu than during the height of the season in the beginning of February.

Three other Arkansas children or teenagers have also died from the flu this season, including two others who were age 5-18 and one child younger than 5. And the proportion of outpatient visits for flu-like illness in Georgia during the same period dipped to 6.5 percent, from 11.9 percent. Even, health officials said that yet it is not so late to get vaccinations.

The Health Department will be adding up the most recent flu numbers later this week.

Since early January, cases of influenza A have been declining, while cases of influenza B have been rising, which often happens in the tail end of the flu season, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

"The season's not over but we're definitely on the downward trend right now", said Dr. Anne Schuchat, the CDC's acting director.

It had been driven by a kind of flu that tends to put more people in the hospital and cause more deaths, and officials lately are seeing less of that.

On Monday, the Division of Public Health announced five more deaths for the 2017-218 flu season, bringing the total to 28-which ties the highest flu-related death total since they have been tracked, recorded in 2014-2015.

Although new cases of flu are on the decline, the level remains above the peak of some previous flu seasons.

Flu is a contagious respiratory illness, spread by a virus.

Brown says because this flu season has been particularly bad, it may help spur changes and developments in making better flu vaccines.
