White House Communications Director Hope Hicks to Resign

And she has told people that she basically wants to spend - be closer to home, to her family in CT, that three years focused exclusively on one thing and working in this incredibly high-pressure and high-intensity environment just takes a toll on anyone. In other words, she didn't seem to have mystical powers to manage him.

The top Democrat on the intelligence panel, California Rep. Adam Schiff, said after the meeting was over that Hicks answered questions about her role in Trump's campaign and answered some questions about the transition period between the election and the inauguration.

Two White House officials said the timing of her departure was awkward for Trump, who is dealing with the fallout of a controversy over security clearances, as well as ongoing probes into Russian meddling in the United States election. "She's a familiar presence at his side in a place where he's uncomfortable, and she understands him more viscerally than others in the press shop who haven't known him as long or observed him up close the way she has since the winter of 2015". Schiff said Hicks did not assert any type of executive privilege, but just said she had been advised not to answer.

"She is as smart and thoughtful as they come, a truly great person", Trump said of Hicks in a statement released by the White House.

While she cut a discreet figure in the White House - refusing all interviews - the former advisor to Ivanka Trump was known around the West Wing for her close relationship with the president's family and as a keen defender of his image. The sudden announcement of her resignation yielded mixed reactions on the internet by White House staffers and other social media users.

He also pinned her demise squarely on Chief of Staff John Kelly, a retired four-star general brought into the infamously wild White House to impose order. She suggested that what happened on Wednesday "was a forced resignation".

Hicks, 29, is Trump's longest serving aide.

A former Ralph Lauren fashion model and public relations pro who worked for Trump's daughter Ivanka, Hicks had no political background when Trump asked her to serve on his campaign.

After House lawmakers argued that she should treat the two committees equally, Hicks and her lawyer conferred with the White House, Schiff said. She was also instrumental on the 2016 Trump presidential campaign, where she quickly became a trusted adviser to Donald Trump. Porter, who was romantically involved with Hicks, stands accused of domestic abuse by both of his ex-wives.

"The most significant issue I have with her testimony are the whole areas she refused to testify on at the instruction of the White House", Schiff said, adding "that's not her fault".

The White House didn't immediately comment. "She's an invaluable team member and one of the originals".

The White House said Hicks is a "valued adviser and counselor to the President and other senior administration officials". As Mueller begins to delve deeper and deeper into Trump's financial affairs and his connection to Russian money, she may have an unusual inside account as to how he operated and the people with whom he interacted.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders - who described Ms Hicks as "in a league of her own" - said it remained unclear when she would leave the administration. Officials from the White House said Hicks reportedly wanted to pursue new opportunities outside.

According to People Politics, born in 1988, Hicks grew up in New York City suburb of Greenwich. Hicks was with the president on Air Force One while they were writing the initial statement. Her acknowledgment apparently caused some concern among her attorneys, with whom she consulted for roughly 20 minutes during that line of questioning, the sources said.
