Walmart raising age restriction on firearms, ammo purchases

Its CEO took on the NRA by demanding tougher gun laws.

Kroger will no longer sell guns to anyone under 21 at the stores it owns, becoming the third major retailer this week to put restrictions in place that are stronger than federal laws.

In 2015, Walmart ended sales of modern sporting rifles, including the AR-15.

Companies like Dick's had already changed gun-sale policies in the wake of the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in CT, but the Parkland shooting has opened a fissure between a portion of corporate America and organizations like the National Rifle Association.

Appearing on U.S. television, Dick's chairman Ed Stack said: "When we saw what the kids were going through and the grief of the parents and the kids who were killed in Parkland, we felt we needed to do something".

On social media opinions were mixed. "You never know now what is coming down the gun barrel". "Mothers make the majority of spending decisions for their families, and we want to shop with businesses that care about the safety of our families - making this a smart business move, too".

Representatives from Academy Sports did not immediately respond to requests for comment. That decision by Dick's Sporting Goods and Walmart on Wednesday comes following the shooting deaths at a Florida school.

Dick's Sporting Goods/Field & Stream announced Wednesday that their stores would no longer sell semi-automatic weapons and ammo, and that a person must be at least 21 years old to purchase any gun.
