Fox Has 5 More X-Men Movies Planned Through 2020

Though fans may think these in-development films may not even see the light of day after the merger, an insider tells THR: "There's been zero slowdown on that front given Disney".

In addition to the FF films, Fox also has a variety of X-Men projects in the works, including this summer's Deadpool 2 and the fall's X-Men: Dark Phoenix.

As comic fans know, if Disney's purchase of the Fox studios goes through, the rights to X-Men and Fantastic Four characters would belong to Marvel Studios. If anything, it nearly feels like news of this merger is speeding things along, making Fox go all-out on some of these properties. And aside from the various X-Men flicks in development, that also includes a "secret" Silver Surfer project that is being written by Saga and Y: The Last Man writer/creator Brian K. Vaughan. "At least at the moment, it's certainly decisions over my pay-grade if it ends up doing so".

There are no further details other than one Fox executive claiming that "We are going 100 miles per hour" on the project. Still, there is concern about how, when the merger is finalized, Disney will handle 20th Century Fox's successful R-rated franchise Deadpool, given how averse the studio has been towards R-rated fare in the past.

There are an uncanny number of X-Men movies on the way over the next couple of years.

Gambit is the first thing that comes to mind, as the Channing Tatum vehicle has been stuck in development for years, and recently lost director Gore Verbinski. A new draft of the script is expected in March and it is greenlit, meaning that the studio has budgeted it. The New Mutants, along with two other unnamed X-Men titles, would join DC's Shazam! and Wonder Woman 2, and Marvel Studios' Captain Marvel, Avengers 4, and the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming. The studio is still focusing on developing both the X-Men and Fantastic Four brands, including a Doctor Doom movie from Fargo and Legion showrunner Noah Hawley.

The Channing Tatum Gambit movie is looking for a new director; X-Force looks to begin filming this October, and regarding the Doctor Doom flick, it's now being written by Legion showrunner Noah Hawley.

"They have to proceed as business as usual in case the merger doesn't go through", says one agent whose clients work on Fox's Marvel movies.
