US Soccer Vice President Carlos Cordeiro Elected to Top Spot

Carlos Cordeiro, a former partner at banking giant Goldman Sachs, was elected to the position on Saturday.

Cordeiro will take over for Sunil Gulati, who has served as the federation's president since 2006.

Cordeiro was a longtime vice president and board member at U.S. Soccer, with many considering him to be Gulati's right-hand man. He has faced heavy criticism since the USA men's national team failed to qualify for this year's World Cup. "We look forward to working with Carlos on the continued advancement of soccer in the United States". "Thank you very much".

Hope Solo did not win the U.S. Soccer presidency, but she certainly took aim at the man who did in a passionate speech before the election. The two establishment candidates Carlos Cordeiro and Kathy Carter have not just been part of the system, they have created and shaped USA soccer into what it is today. One of Cordeiro's first orders of business will be finding a replacement. MLS, as well as the National Women's Soccer League and United Soccer League, shifted their support to Cordeiro after the second ballot.

Earlier in the week, Solo called out Carter for the same refusal to hand over that revenue breakdown in an interview with the Guardian, during which she also speculated her questioning over image rights helped lead to her dismissal from the USA national team. All eight were given five minutes to address delegates before voting began.

"We got a candidate we can unify behind", Holden said about Cordeiro after the vote, per Fox Soccer. A vote for either one of them is a vote for the status quo: disunity, discord and more failure.

The "change" parties had an agreement on the language of the statement, but Wynalda soon pulled out, according to one person present at the meeting, because he wanted language inserted into the agreement that the six agreed to back the change candidate with the highest vote total after the first ballot. Failure on the pitch, conflict and chaos off of it and not the progress that we need. "Today, the status quo is unacceptable", he said.

It's going to be a long, fascinating, and important day for U.S. Soccer, and every fan of hte USMNT, USWNT, MLS, or any other soccer team in America should pay close attention because of how huge this election is for the future of the sport in this country.

Cordeiro, who won on the third ballot, replaces Sunil Gulati and will serve a four-year term. Gulati will retain a role as a member of the USSF board and the Federation Internationale de Football Association executive council, and as chairman of the North American bid to host the 2026 World Cup.
