Trump Wishes Former Aide Well After Accusations Of Domestic Violence

"We immediately confronted the staffer, he denied the allegations and he resigned today", White House deputy press secretary Raj Shah said in a statement.

Pressure is mounting on White House chief of staff John Kelly amid questions about his defense of a senior aide he fought to keep in a highly sensitive West Wing job despite accusations of spousal abuse from two ex-wives.

Dozens of White House and Trump administration officials reportedly are still operating without full security clearances including President Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner. Photos of one of Porter's ex-wives with a black eye surfaced publicly, which eventually led to the White House expressing concern about the allegations.

For all the turmoil, Trump on Friday warmly praised Porter, saying it was a "tough time" for his former aide and noting that Porter had denied the accusations.

The White House was already under scrutiny over its handling of Porter's departure who announced his resignation on Wednesday. That doesn't change how serious and disturbing these allegations are.

Speechwriter David Sorensen resigned on Friday after the White House learned of the allegations against him.

A White House official said staffers felt misled about how Mr Porter downplayed the allegations, both to Mr Kelly and Mr McGahn.

White House staff secretary Rob Porter, a member of President Donald Trump's inner circle and arguably Kelly's closest aide, cleaned out his desk on Thursday.

Mr Porter has denied the allegations, calling them "outrageous" and part of "a co-ordinated smear campaign".

"He says he's innocent, and I think you have to remember that", Trump said. But he was supportive of his former staff secretary.

Porter told him about the possible allegations because he was concerned that what he characterized as false charges from aggrieved women who were out to destroy him could derail his Federal Bureau of Investigation background check, according to one of the two people briefed on the matter.

Despite the allegations, he received interim security clearance to act as gatekeeper to the United States president.

"He worked very hard", Trump told reporters in the Oval Office when asked for a comment about Porter.

Some complained that Donald F. McGahn II, the White House counsel, who learned in January 2017 that Porter was concerned about potentially damaging accusations from two ex-wives, had not been forthcoming enough about what he knew. Porter has denied the allegations. On Thursday evening, to White House staff about domestic violence, writing, "While we are all processing the shocking and troubling allegations made against a former White House staffer, I want you to know that we all take matters of domestic violence seriously".
