Knierims rescue U.S. on opening day of Olympic team event

Here are five things you might have missed from the first day of Olympic competition in PyeongChang.

Even though this event turns an individual sport into a team affair, the Knierims didn't feel any added pressure when they saw Chen's performance while riding the bus to the rink.

One of the most-watched events of the Winter Olympic games is the women's figure skating. Nathan Chen of the usa was fourth, again after an imperfect skate.

The Japanese team is without its star skater, reigning Olympic and world champion Yuzuru Hanyu. There are some technique contrasts-wheels require more force than blades to generate speed, for instance-but the two disciplines share more commonalities than differences.

In any event, the Olympics comes as a welcome opportunity for respite - from national politics and that other Russian Federation scandal; from the snow and ice piling up in our driveways and steps; from the nearly daily revelations of physical or sexual abuse and/or harassment by the powerful (which has touched even the U.S. Olympic Committee through gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar and possibly others); and from the rapidly rising national debt. "Inline skating has had a very positive impact on the program".

What are the rules of long track speedskating?

"At the Four Continents championships (in Taipei last month) we were able to perform what we have been putting together for the first time". Jansen's sister died of leukemia the morning of his first race of the games. The Knierims don't figure to challenge for a medal in their event next week. "It's just been a lot of fun because we don't get a lot of time together, but it's fantastic with technology you feel like you know these guys now, so it's been a lot of fun". Some of us are going to make mistakes. KC Boutiette was a brash, smack-talking 24-year-old inline skater from Tacoma, Washington, looking to sharpen his skills for the roads.

"We addressed the fact that we're all in this room is the person that's not here with us", Granato said. "We hope our performance will motivate the rest of the team".

U.S. Speedskating took note and began scouring the nation for inline talent.

"Hi everyone", the three-time world champion says to the gaggle of media here, grinning. We're a great team, so they're very supportive.

Speedskating goes on throughout the games.

"This is my first Olympics, so I wondered what kind of intensity I would skate with, but I was not especially nervous", the 20-year-old Uno said.

"Anything between 75 and 80 is a really high score for us, so we're happy with that", said Duhamel.

Jackson came into the program through the International Skating Union's transition program, something of a wider-reaching, updated version of WhIP.

Ryan Shimabukoro, Jackson's coach, heads up the ISU transition program. That is the jump with the most difficulty, and she's one of the few who has been able to include it in her routines. "You need certain values of work ethic, perseverance, determination and focus - for any athlete, no matter what your background is". "Throughout the day I'll snack a lot".

"She made it really fun".

"Never been interested in them", she explained.

On the verge of their trip to South Korea, her hip bone - "my only part of my body that could fall on him" - landed directly on his left eye during a lift. On the NBC broadcast, he said he was disappointed with his performance and because he felt he "let the team down".
