The Mumbai Police had registered a case on December 29, 2017. "Even though Murthy has allegedly already posted an apology for some of his posts, the NCW, in its letter to the Maharashtra DGP, requested for the DGP's personal involvement", the commission said in a press release.

It was in November that the NCW had written to the Director General of Police, Maharashtra regarding the usage of objectionable, derogatory, sexual remarks and obscene signs on social media by Mahesh Murthy.

Based on the December complaint, an FIR was filed in Khar police station under sections 354 D (stalking) and 509 (word, gesture or act meant to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code read with 67A of the Information Technology Act. This is an attempt to counter-sue.

In a long and detailed post on Medium, Murthy had denied all allegation stating that they all are "complete lies". So called "star investor" Mahesh Murthy is behind bars.
