Rian Johnson Reacts to 'Star Wars

One fan was so upset that after viewing, he created a petition to have the movie stricken from official canon and called on Disney to push back Episode 9 and remake The Last Jedi. It is not known whether she has any surviving relatives because her backstory was not revealed in "The Force Awakens" or "The Last Jedi".

It's been a week since Star Wars: The Last Jedi' hit the theaters.

According to director Rian Johnson, though, Kylo isn't lying from his point of view, as he explained to Entertainment Weekly.

"It came about because we were getting to the end of making this and again, I knew I wasn?t doing the next one".

So, that leads you down a really specific path in terms of where his head is at. But hey, they shouldn't be able to take down troopers and their transports just because they know how to fight and defeat bigger and tougher predators, right?

Eventually Luke does leave the island - not physically, but through a force projection - and comes to the rescue of the Resistance. There were hints throughout "The Last Jedi", from Kylo Ren not being able to execute his mother, Leia Organa, to his surprisingly understanding tone in his telepathic Force-fueled conversations with Rey. "It would be an act of mythmaking".

But, how did Hamill take the news?

"They're all female, and I wanted them to feel like a remote sort of little nunnery", The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson said earlier this year. "Understandably so. Mark had all these years to think what Luke's triumphant return would be".

Bringing Luke Skywalker back from self-imposed exile was also a big challenge for Johnson. His death is not just wholly and completely unpredictable in a single film, it reframes a previous movie, changes the progression of the sequel trilogy, and reshapes the real meaning of the greater franchise.

Johnson said that criticism is normal in the movie industry. "But I knew this is where it had to be". The scene was nearly as good as Duel of the Fates, when Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn had a lightsaber duel with Darth Maul, the rare prequel highlight that still ranks as the one of the best "Star Wars" moments. Second place is not a bad to start at all, especially considering that the top spot has been kept by "Star Wars: The Force Awakens". There are also smaller petitions circulating out there, with some similarly calling to remove The Last Jedi from canon, and others calling for director Rian Johnson's removal from the franchise or insisting that Johnson "admit that The Last Jedi is terrible".

The movie shifted focus away from intergalactic politics to focus on Luke Skywalker's character arc. "It opened more possibilities as opposed to fewer".
