Mary Elizabeth Winstead to Star Opposite Will Smith in 'Gemini Man'

After a news drought, Gemini Man, the sci-fi thriller from director Ang Lee (Life of Pi) starring Will Smith, has experienced a flurry of casting activity, starting with The Hollywood Reporter recently revealing that Clive Owen (The Knick) was in talks to join the project in an unnamed villain role.

Clive Owen is now in talks to play one of the villains of the movie, the head of the cloning program.

If that all sounds a bit Looper-meets-Orphan Black, it's interesting to note that Winstead apparently edged ahead of Orphan Black's Tatiana Maslany for the part.

Skydance came on to the project, which has been in development for two decades, last year. Winstead will play an operative tasked with spying on Henry before teaming up with him. He's marked for death and learns that the man out to kill him is a younger cloned version of himself.

Gemini Man is now slated for a October 4, 2019 release.

Gemini Man was originally set at Walt Disney Pictures in 1997 from a Darren Lemki pitch, but the film wasn't able to be made as the VFX were not yet ready to use the same actor for both roles. The film is being co-produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, as well as Skydance's David Ellison and Dana Goldberg, with Don Murphy as executive producer.
