Media player Kodi is finally available on Xbox One

Kodi media center which is an open source cross platform media player which allows users to browse and view videos, photos, podcasts and music is now available for Xbox ONe users. For example, the software now only has "limited access" to a small portion of any given Xbox One's Video and Music folders and "Network support is limited to only NFS:// shares". Network support is limited to only NFS:// shares.

Besides Windows 10, Windows 10 Mobile, and now Xbox One, Kodi also runs on Apple's OSX and iOS, Google's Android, as well as Linux and Raspberry Pi. The media streaming system which has its roots with the original Xbox console was available on every other platform, but it was missing from the Xbox consoles. There's no way to watch Blu-rays or any other disc because Kodi can't even see your optical drive.

After installing the app, the Xbox One users will be able to enjoy Kodi's PVR feature through a PVR client add-on. Many have already downloaded the initial Kodi 18.0-Alpha1 on their systems. Kodi comes with full set of features from Windows 10 Store version which include add ons. "There might still be problems with certain general python modules that are used by add-ons and we are finding and reporting them to the developers as testing progresses", Kaijserintated noted. It means the app would support most features of Windows 10 for PC. A really tedious job as part of the code still include "hacks" based on the first Xbox. "In the year 2014 we finally closed the door and renamed from XBMC to what we are now, Kodi".

For now, it seems that Kodi is available as an alpha or limited launch. However, there are some limitations to what the UWP version of Kodi can and can't do (as I discovered last night after poking around a bit). Converting from 32-bit to UWP is a feat few companies have been able to accomplish, especially in such a short amount of time. That is no longer the case as Kodi is now available, at least for some, on the Xbox One, turning the gaming console into an even more serious all-in-one entertainment solution.
